GMTNIRS – The High Resolution Near-IR Spectrograph for the Giant Magellan Telescope

چکیده
We present a conceptual design for a powerful, high-resolution near-infrared spectrograph for the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT). This instrument, the Giant Magellan Telescope Near-Infrared Spectrograph (GMTNIRS), uses silicon immersion gratings as the primary dispersing elements. The design has two modules, one for 1.1-2.4 m for use under native seeing conditions and one for 3-5.5 m to be used with adaptive optics. The resulting design is physically compact and allows us to cover entire infrared atmospheric windows in a single exposure with resolving powers up to 100,000.

Adaptive Optics High Resolution Spectroscopy: Present Status and Future Direction
High resolution spectroscopy experiments with visible adaptive optics (AO) telescopes at Starfire Optical Range and Mt. Wilson have demonstrated that spectral resolution can be routinely improved by a factor of ~ 10 over the seeing-limited case with no extra light losses at visible wavelengths. With large CCDs now available, a very wide wavelength range can be covered in a single exposure. In t...
متن کاملA giant molecular cloud falling through the heart of Cygnus A: clues to the triggering of the activity
We present intermediate resolution near-IR long-slit spectroscopic data for the nearby radio galaxy Cygnus A (3C 405) (obtained with the NIRSPEC spectrograph on the Keck II telescope). The data reveal considerable complexity in the near-IR emission line kinematics, including line splittings of 200-350 km s and a mixture of narrow (FWHM ∼200 km s) and broad (FWHM ∼700 km s) components to the emi...

We present here new results on circumstellar nebulosity around SU Aurigae, a T-Tauri star of about 2 solar mass and 5 Myrs old at 152 pc in the J, H and K bands using high resolution adaptive optics imaging (0. 30) with the Penn state IR Imaging Spectrograph (PIRIS) at the 100 inch Mt. Wilson telescope. A comparison with HST STIS optical (0.2 to 1.1 micron) images shows that the orientation of ...
متن کاملA New Abundance Scale for the Globular Cluster 47tuc
We present chemical abundances for O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti and Fe in eight red giants and one turnoff star in the metal rich globular cluster 47Tuc, based on spectroscopy with the MIKE high resolution spectrograph on the Magellan 6.5-m Clay telescope. A robust line by line differential abundance analysis technique, relative to the K-giant Arcturus, was used to reduce systematic errors from at...
متن کاملDesign tradeoffs for a high spectral resolution mid-infrared echelle spectrograph on the Thirty-Meter Telescope
A feasibility design study was undertaken to assess the requirements of a mid-infrared echelle spectrograph (MIRES) with a resolving power of 120,000 and its associated mid-infrared adaptive optics (MIRAO) system on the Thirty-Meter Telescope. Our baseline design incorporates a 2Kx2K Si:As array or array mosaic for the spectrograph and a 1Kx1K Si:As array for the slit viewer. Various tradeoffs ...
